Michael Carrick Calls Manchester United’s Champions League Loss to Como ‘Unacceptable’

Manchester United suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to Cesc Fabregas’ Como side in Italy, exposing defensive weaknesses and a lack of attacking coordination. This defeat extends the Premier League club’s winless streak to seven matches, intensifying scrutiny on Carrick’s position.

Speaking after the game, Carrick took full responsibility for the team’s display and apologized to the traveling fans. He stated, “It was more than disappointing. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that. I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance – that’s where it stops. It stops with me, and I’m absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally. But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say.”

Carrick had hoped a recent draw against rivals Leeds United would mark a turning point, but the team delivered another poor performance. Como took an early lead when Nico Paz scored from outside the box. Despite an early chance for Diogo Dalot, United struggled to find rhythm, with Harry Maguire heading wide. Como continued to press, and United was fortunate to only be one goal down at halftime.

Substitutions and tactical adjustments by Carrick at halftime did not prevent Como from extending their lead. Tasos Douvikas scored after being set up by Paz, and Paz added a second goal shortly after intercepting a pass. Although Amad Diallo had an opportunity, Jean Butez made the save. Como sealed their victory with a header from Jacobo Ramon in the 76th minute. Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation goal for United.

Despite missing nine players, United’s performance lacked the attacking intent shown by Como, who also had injury concerns. Carrick emphasized his concern for the supporters, stating, “I care an unbelievable amount about the supporters. They are the heartbeat of this football club, and they always will be. For them to travel, I had to apologise for the performance. To have to watch a performance like that, I totally feel for them. There are no excuses at all. It is not acceptable.”

The pressure is mounting on Carrick, but he declined to comment on his job security, insisting that the team’s performance was the immediate priority. He told TNT Sports, “It’s not about me. It’s about digesting the game, and how it went. That is the most important thing right now.”
