Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portugal Football Federation after leaving the national team’s camp during the Nations League matches in September and October. The decision came after Ronaldo, who was an unused substitute in a 2-1 victory over Norway, reportedly fell out with manager Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo stated after leaving that Jesus had “broken his word” regarding playing time. This action led to his suspension from the national team.
The ban officially began on October 1, making him eligible for the November fixtures. Despite the incident, Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proenca emphasized Ronaldo’s crucial role, referring to him as “our captain” and “a key piece” of the team.
Ronaldo holds the record for most appearances and most goals for Portugal, with 146 goals in 234 games. He participated in the World Cup, where Portugal was eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain, and captained the team in the Nations League matches prior to his departure.
Portugal secured victories in both Nations League games without Ronaldo, defeating Denmark 4-2 and Norway 2-1. These wins have put them close to qualifying for the knockout stages.
Since leaving the national team camp, Ronaldo has scored in recent matches for his club, Al Nassr.
